Venet Lumen Service and the
Tenebrae Service

Venet Lumen

'Coming Light'

Tenebrae

'Darkness'

At Chaplin Church, we set in motion the life and death of Jesus starting with Christmas and ending with Resurrection Sunday (Easter).  While it may seem sequentially backwards in our calendar year, it makes perfect sense when you start with Christmas and combine Resurrection Sunday (Easter) as a continued celebration after the December 25th Holiday.  Christmas represents the birth of our Savior and Resurrection Sunday is the celebration of His resurrection.

For us to understand the meanings of these two services we need to define them within the understanding of our Savior Jesus Christ.

The 'Venet Lumen' service or 'Coming Light' represents the birth of Jesus.  The service starts with 14 candles that represent the 14 main readings of the birth of Jesus from the Old Testament into the Gospels of Jesus.  Each reading is represented by a candle that is lit after each reading till all 14 are burning.  Then we take that last John 3:16 candle and light the final 'Christ' candle of our Advent wreath and then from the Christ candle we then light each persons candle in attendance at the service and then give praise to our Lord for His birth.

The 'Tenebrae' service or 'Darkness' service represents the days of Jesus death before His resurrection.  During this service we run through the 12 stations of the cross with different readings from God's Word and each time a reading takes place a candle is extinguished.  When the last candle is out, we hear about Jesus death and look forward to Easter Morning service when we celebrate His resurrection to the Father.

Both services are beautiful in content and the significance of them recall us to the Word of God that tells us WHY Jesus had to come to this world and also why He had to die.

Join us for these special days and better yet join us during the Sunday's in-between.
